The module emphasizes the significance of leadership, policies, transparency, validation, and just culture in the promotion of patient safety in the healthcare system. Relevant to this is the Institute of Medicine (IOM) description of patient safety as a critical concern in healthcare organizations leading to an essential first step in increasing the quality of care emphasizing safety culture. Safety culture as emanating from the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behavior that determine the commitment to, and the style and proficiency of, an organization’s health and safety management Lee et al. (2019). Listening to the videos one can easily identify areas of weaknesses and gaps that could have been easily circumvented if the elements of patient safety were properly enforced. Due to the complexity of the healthcare system in reference to patient care, practicing patient safety is vital to preventing errors and harm when caring for the patient. Nurses contribute to and promote patient safety practices. Nursing as frontline workers in patient care is compelled to lead the way in patient safety initiatives and promote a culture of safety while collaborating with other healthcare workers to achieve the goal. Nursing knowledge generated from nursing theories can be utilized in delivering patient-centered care for the best quality outcomes. Nursing theories encompass the knowledge contributed by nurses in the healthcare system and must be recognized Ortiz (2021). Applying a good assessment of a patient’s condition and following recommended guidelines will aid in abating unnecessary treatment like antimicrobial which exposes individuals to a higher risk than was anticipated to treat (Haley & Fritz, 2019).
